Frank Rich: Success is Failure

John on November 1, 2009 at 9:51 pm

Orwell would have loved Frank Rich. Here’s his take on NY-23:

The more rightists who win G.O.P. primaries, the greater the Democrats’ prospects next year.

So the Democrats are losing in Virginia and, most likely, in New York. They will possibly squeak out a win in deep blue New Jersey, but only because of a spoiler third party candidate currently taking about 8% of the vote, most of it from the Republican. Frank Rich wants to assure his leftist readers this is a sign of strength for the Democratic party.

Sure it is, Frank.

He tries the same success=failure approach again later in the same column, this time with respect to FOX News:

It’s become a Beltway truism that the White House’s (mild) spat with Fox News is counterproductive because it drives up the network’s numbers. But if curious moderate and independent voters are now tempted to surf there and encounter Beck’s histrionics for the first time, the president’s numbers will benefit as well.

Got it? Surging numbers for FOX (not to mention widespread rejection of Obama’s attempt to marginalize them) is actually good news for Obama.

Sure it is, Frank. Because FOX is double-plus ungood.

He concludes with this flourish-of-stupid:

It’s Afghanistan and joblessness, not the Stalinists of the right, that have the power to bring this president down.

Because most Republicans think a win in NY-23 is going to bring Obama down? Which Republican leaders have made such a claim, Frank? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Yeah, didn’t think so. No one considers these races more important that the national unemployment rate or Afghanistan. It’s a straw man and a thin one at that.

Rich is right about one thing. The harsh realities we face at home and abroad are the real threat to Obama’s future. So far he hasn’t impressed on either front.

“Stalinists of the right” as opposed to Leninists of the left?

Rich is simply one more example of, “if you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullsh*t”.

Obviously no intelligent person could surmise that behind Beck’s emotional histrionics…he might actually have a point, right?

The meme is let’s not evaluate Beck’s message through factual examination, lets just denounce him as an ‘extremist’, that way we can neuter him and he has no message. Which is of course the liberal strategy.

    Unfortunately, facts are stubborn things.
