Last night I watched an episode of Law & Order that I recorded Friday night. If you missed it, the plot involved a fundamentalist father who murders a high school biology teacher because he is teaching his daughter evolution. It was full of Christian bashing dialogue from beginning to end, equating belief in God with mental disease. I looked to see if Sam Harris was a consultant. Probably uncredited…
This seems to be a recurring pattern. I wrote about a British show which did an hour about Christian terrorists a few months ago. But whatever, they’re just TV shows.
Not so sure what to make about this though. A New Jersey high school staged a mock terrorist attack:
The mock terror attack involved two irate men armed with handguns who invaded the high school through the front door. They pretended to shoot several students in the hallway and then barricaded themselves in the media center with 10 student hostages.
Two Burlington Township police detectives portrayed the gunmen. Investigators described them as members of a right-wing fundamentalist group called the “New Crusaders” who don’t believe in separation of church and state. The mock gunmen went to the school seeking justice because the daughter of one had been expelled for praying before class.
Only about 10 students — who volunteered to be hostages — were present for the mock attack. Still, I’m sure it’s the talk of the school. And I think I get why they came up with this particular scenario. Imagine the outcry if they’d made this a mock attack by Muslim terrorists. CAIR would be all over it. And, to be fair, a Christian group called Wallbuilders is making noise about the drill.
Here’s the thing, though. When was the last time Christians stormed a school with guns. See, I just can’t remember that happening. I remember Columbine and the massacre perpetrated by two atheists there. I remember Beslan and the children murdred by Islamic martyrs, some of whom were linked to a mosque in London. I remember the gay bar shooter, who turned out to be a militant secularist. I remember the group of girls poisoned in Afghanistan for going to school. I remember the teacher murdered recently by her Islamic students for not respecting the Koran. I remember the terrorists in the Phillipines who shot an entire family including a 9-month old baby after asking if they were Christians. I remember the Indonesian christian girls who were beheaded by Muslims while walking to school.
What I don’t remember is any Christian terrorists attacking schools or shooting kids. Maybe I missed something, but I don’t think so. So, yeah, this pisses me off a bit. Christians get dumped on not because they’re bad guys, but because they’re the only group that can be dumped on without fear of reprisal. In other words, because we’re decidedly not bad guys, we have to be stand ins for those who decidedly are.
I wonder if the cops in Burlington Township watch Law & Order?
Update 4/4 11:30AM: The school district where the simulated terror attack took place has issued an apology on its website saying “any perceived insensitivities to our religious communities . . . are regrettable.” They’ve also suggested that the scenario was developed by the sheriff’s office and directed people there for further information.
