KU lightning rod Paul Mirecki has hired an attorney and plans to sue the university for failing to support him throughout his “ordeal.” The story also contains a photo of Mirecki with two black eyes and a bruised arm. The story notes that he is very unhappy with the police response to his beating.
He said he was interviewed by officers several times, “once for five hours straight. They keep asking me the same things over and over. They seized my car; they entered my office and seized my computer. They said they need them for their investigation but it didn’t make any sense to me.”
It sounds to me like the police are as suspicous of his story as I am. I don’t blame them. Mirecki has also issued a press release. Big surprise it’s all about the evil religious right. So, just to be perfectly clear at this point. I don’t believe Mirecki’s story for the following reasons:
- It was very conveniently timed.
- I don’t know any Christians who would do something like this.
- From the beginning he has wanted to give “fundies” a slap in their face. And I think he still does.
That said, it’s clear someone hit him. Maybe it really did happen by the roadside. Maybe it really was some incredibly moronic Christians who did it. Anything is possible. But right now all we have to go on is the word of “the Evil Dr. P.” That’s just not good enough for me. I hope the police resolve this soon. If he turns out to be telling the truth, I’ll be sure to say so.
