Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas said in an interview with Channel 1 on Thursday that a framework agreement has been reached on a prisoner swap involving captured Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit.
Abbas said that the sides still need to work out the details of the agreement, according to Israel Radio.
“We agreed recently on a framework with [Prime Minister Ehud] Olmert to solve the problem of Shalit, in agreement with the Egyptians, and this process is happening quickly,” Abbas said.
Not that Abbas is working with the kidnappers or anything. In any case, a Hamas spokesman says not so fast:
A Hamas official, Osama al-Muzaini, described Abbas’s comments as “not as accurate as he said.”
“Although there is movement on this issue, we cannot say that things have reached the final stage yet,” he told Reuters. “There are still issues that need to be agreed upon.”
Hamas is demanding the release of some 1,400 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Shalit.
The human exchange rate sort of tells you which country values human life and which one is a kleptocratic banana republic run by murderous thugs…doesn’t it.
Olmert has obviously reversed himself from last summer when he refused to consider releasing prisoners or to otherwise negotiate with terrorists. I know it’s a bad idea and will only encourage more of the same, but it’s hard to be dogmatic when this 19 year old kis has been captive for 8 months.
I hope Cpl. Shalit is released soon. I hope Hamas gets what’s coming to them.
