So President Obama is heading to Copenhagen later this week to help make the case for Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Olympics. Apparently sending the First Lady, senior White House adviser Valerie Jarrett, and Education Secretary Arne Duncan – ***Update: and Transportation Secy. Ray LaHood – (all from Chicago) was not a substantial enough dedication of federal resources to reflect just how important a priority this is for…President Obama.
Does he not have enough on his plate? I mean, in between trying to change our entire health care system, reverse climate change, and rid the world of nuclear weapons – sure, why not a little jaunt over to Copenhagen with Oprah?
In all seriousness, I think this reflects a a serious misplacement of priorities on the President’s part. Especially with the news today via Hot Air that the President has only spoken once (!) with the General who is overseeing the campaign in Afghanistan. And speaking of Afghanistan, isn’t there an enormously important decision pending on whether the President is going to commit the resources necessary for victory? Why yes, yes there is.
And forget Copenhagen – do you know how many times the President has visited New Orleans since he has been in office? I’ll give you a hint – it starts and ends with a ZERO. This is a man who opportunistically strolled through the shattered streets of New Orleans during the campaign, posturing and preening in front of the cameras about the failures of the prior administration and his commitment to helping the city recover if he were elected. From the New York Sun on Aug. 2007:
Senator Obama, a Democratic presidential candidate, said yesterday that the country cannot fail New Orleans again and that as president, he would keep the city in mind every day. “The words never again cannot be another empty phrase,” he said in front of one of the few rebuilt houses in the city’s Gentilly Woods section. “It cannot become another empty promise.”
And yet, he hasn’t found the time this year to visit the region even ONCE? But somehow he can find the time to squeeze in a spur-of-the-moment trip to Denmark to pitch his home town of Chicago as a host site for the Olympics!? Talk about audacity.
Given the current state of the economy I can say with certainty that whether Chicago hosts the Olympics in 2016 is way down the priority list for most Americans. In fact, I think most people outside of Illinois could care less. And I think it’s well past time for the President to take a step back and reassess his own priorities. He’d be well-advised to do so. Because sooner or later the rest of America is going to realize what those of us who have been paying closer attention already know. For President Obama and his cult of followers, it’s all about His Glory. Always has been, and regrettably it looks like it always will be.
