This just in…
According to Eileen Zurbriggen, the A.P.A’s chairman:
“The consequences of the sexualization of girls in media are likely to be a negative influence on girls’ healthy development. We have ample evidence to conclude that sexualization has negative effects in a variety of domains, including cognitive functioning, physical and mental health, and healthy sexual development.”
Wow! It took them HOW LONG to figure this out? Parents have been complaining about this for YEARS!
John did a great post on this whole issue last October.
Nice that the A.P.A could join the rest of us who live in the real world as we FREAK OUT over g-strings for 5 year olds, fishnet stockings for 8 year olds, and pole-dancing kits for 10 year olds.
John adds: Here’s a Telegraph story about the statement. I find it encouraging that the APA has specifically targeted Bratz dolls:
Last night Sue Palmer, the education consultant and author of Toxic Childhood, said: “The same mothers that dress their daughters up like tarts are probably the mothers going on demos against paedophiles. They don’t make the connection between how they are dressing children and what they are so frightened of — paedophilia.” A Bratz spokesman said its dolls were bought by over-eights. “The Bratz brand, which has remained number one in the UK market for 23 consecutive months focuses core values on friendship, hair play and a ‘passion for fashion’.”
They’ll keep selling them as long as dumb-as-rocks parents keep buying them.
Scott Adds: The Bratz spokesman acts as though it isn’t a big deal because “…its dolls were bought by over-eights”!!! Are you freakin’ kidding me?!?!? What he appears to be saying is that “under-eights” should be kept pure and wholesome, but for “over-eights” (ages 9 – ?) all bets are off so lets turn them into shallow, fashion-zelous, appearance-focused, hyper-sexualized sluts.
Excellent spin, my friend!
What moron put this IDIOT in charge of P.R. for the Bratz franchise?
I’m thinking that he probably doesn’t have any children, or at least any daughters.
And if he does have daughters, I would hate to think of what he considers to be an appropriate relationship with them.
