When Wardrobe Matters

On October 22, 2008, just two weeks before the presidential election, Politico broke one of the biggest stories of the cycle:

The Republican National Committee has spent more than $150,000 to clothe and accessorize vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her family since her surprise pick by John McCain in late August.

This scoop resulted in follow-up articles in hundreds of newspapers and websites around the world. It was the Democrats favorite media story right up to the election.

But even prior to that, Huffington Post had published a detailed inquest into John McCain’s $500 Ferragamo loafers. That story also made the rounds and showed up everywhere from Salon to the Washington Post to Andrew Sullivan’s blog as a symbol of McCain’s blue blood. There are thousands of mentions of it on the web.

michelle's handbagYesterday the Daily News reported that Michelle Obama was seen carrying a $6,000 handbag during her trip to Russia:

Italian luxury goods manufacturer VBH boasted yesterday that First Lady Michelle Obama had toted their $5,950 alligator manila clutch earlier this week while on a trip to Russia.

No way, said the White House, which countered that the First Lady was carrying an $875 VBH patent leather clutch.

After sticking to their initial claim, the high-end leather manufacturer is now backing off. “If that’s what the White House is saying, then it’s a patent bag,” admitted VBH rep Kelly Vitko.

Despite being certain about the bag being the nearly $6,000 version – “it’s definitely ours [manila bag],” she said earlier this morning — the rep now says that she made an assumption and misidentified the bag.

So, the White House response is that it’s only a $900 purse, because ya know that’s just perfectly reasonable. But prior to the call they apparently received from David Axelrod, the manufacturer (who probably would know) said it was the $6,000 bag.

So far, only the NY Daily News and the Examiner have touched this story. It’s not because they aren’t interested in Michelle’s style, that’s for certain. Might it have something to do with the fact that she’s part of the Democrats’ team?
