Very odd. In case you haven’t been following it, we’ve had about three days of high profile Palin bashing. The focus is a long piece appearing in Vanity Fair. That piece set off a blog war of sorts between one of Palin’s handlers at the McCain campaign (Steve Schmidt, the guy believed to be the source of the Palin trashing) and Bill Kristol at the Weekly Standard who is a Palin supporter and has criticized Schmidt in the past.
Here’s part of the announcement:
Anyway, here’s the tail end of her announcement:
It certainly sounds like she has decided she’s a liability. That’s certainly what a lot of moderate Republicans have been saying. It also sounds as if she’s had a job offer of sorts. What is this new direction that she shared with her kids?
A lot of people are saying this is all to set up her run in 2012. I don’t buy it. This is not the way to do that and Palin is smart enough to know it. Also, her frequent references to advancing the ball outside the political bloodsport makes it sound like she’ll be taking a job with some large organization. Is the NRA hiring? National Right to Life?
Then there’s always the possibility that this is a pre-emtory response to some kind of coming scandal. The fact that her former aids have been bickering in the national press all week, bolstered by the fact that Steve Schmidt seems to be a real slimeball, makes this somewhat more plausible. I sorta doubt it would be a Sanford type of scandal. And the ethics complaints so far have been nonsense.
So what’s going on? At this point, your guess is as good as mine.
Update: Russ at Ace’s places has some thoughts on what might be next for Palin.
