Pro Abortion Fanatics Issue Death Threats in UK

John on November 25, 2006 at 4:18 pm

A British MP proposed a bill to reduce the legal limit on abortion from 24 weeks to 21:

Nadine Dorries’s Bill – entitled ‘Termination of Abortion’ – would have reduced the legal limit of abortion from 24 weeks to 21, and would have required a 10 day “cooling off” period for a woman to know what her risks concerning both abortion and carrying her pregnancy to term “as a condition of informed consent”. Mrs. Dorries argued for the bill on the basis that the latest scientific research had placed fetal sentience at approximately 21 weeks…

The response to her rather modest proposal was an all out jihad by pro abortion groups:

[A]bortion activists sent her death threats…according to the Bedford News. “My staff have been told they will burn in hell, my home has been besieged by anonymous telephone calls, extremist groups have sent out inflammatory messages to their members,” said Conservative MP Nadine Dorries of Mid Bedfordshire. “It got so bad that we had to alert House of Commons security and my constituency police.”

The bill lost 187-108, but Nadine has vowed to reintroduce it:

“Why such extremists think this kind of behaviour will deter me I have no idea. If anything it reinforces my conviction to carry on,” said Mrs. Dorries. “We were not intimidated by the extremists and continue to move forward with the campaign which I have called ‘Abortion Rights and Wrongs – the case for reform of abortion law’.”

Good for her. The UK law is far more rational than the current US law which allows abortion up to the time of birth for any reason. I guess there are some ways in which Europe is ahead of us. [HT: Hot Air]

Since most people who are pro-choice are usually labeled as heathens, heretics, or atheists, I find it hard to believe that this woman is receiving calls saying that she will burn in hell. That line is usually used by the Christians against anyone who disagrees with them. I know of at least three people who are sure that God has the sauna on high for me.

Yeah, that seemed like a weird one to me too, Roger. How exactly do you come to the position that this MP is going to burn in hell for proposing a law, but those who abort 23 week old babies are on the side of the angels. I don’t get that at all. But I’m learning there are all sorts of strange (and sometimes interesting) people out there.

It should be noted that pro-life groups and pro-life MPs were not behind Nadine’s bill at all. Instead, she chose to be a maverick and abandon these groups when she realized they wouldn’t compromise on key provisions of her bill. This bill was a compromise. While it would have restricted abortions for social reasons to a 21 week time limit, it would have fast tracked abortions after final consent while doing nothing for disabled babies. This bill would have done nothing for the pro-life movement in Britain and it was a relief when it was defeated.

    Matthew,

I’m not sure I see how achieving nothing is better than something. What has the pro-life movement in the UK accomplished recently apart from Nadine’s bill?
