This piece reports on an annual study which seems to indicate that based on per-state income levels, the most generous states are those in the Bible belt. The least generous are those in New England where those who do give tend to give to secular charities.
Of course the conclusions are controversial, though it seems this is mostly because they tend to demonstrate what New Englanders fear most, i.e. that compared to the “rubes” in the Bible Belt they are quite selfish. By the way, this is the fourth year in a row that the numbers have come out this way.
