SLAYER-Mocking the Musicians Who Mock Christ

Scott on October 12, 2006 at 2:03 pm

Following on the heals of John’s recommendation of Michael Medved’s blog, I went to the blog (a trip VERY MUCH WORTH MAKING) and saw one of his posts that reminded me of a post I had planned on writing in August. But I was getting ready for a family vacation, and forgot about my intention…until now.

The metal group Slayer put out their latest offering in August titled “Christ Illusion.” When I caught the title of the release, I was intrigued though not surprised. It happens with surprising regularity…someone wants to make a “big splash” and so they resort to the easiest way to generate interest: offend someone. To do this, they look for the target that offers the easiest and most convenient source of controversey… Christianity. Slayer isn’t the first and certainly won’t be the last, and honestly they aren’t even very good at what they do. At one point early on in their career, they were far more relevant to the music scene, but now they have become a characature of themselves, heading down the same sad, ridiculous road as Marilyn Manson, Ozzy Osborne, Rob Zombie, Burzum and Varg Vikernes, Mayhem, etc, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah.

As I said, Slayer isn’t an example of amazing musicianship, or even of good musicianship. Their lyrics are trite, unoriginal blather that I’m sure they think are clever and filled with wit, but are instead the warmed-over dregs of the anti-morality/anti-faith/anti-God secular humanists who have been hoisting their pseudo-intellectual crap on society for too many years to count. As an example of the quality of Slayer’s contribution to the world at large, feel free to read over the lyrics to their song “Skeleton Christ:”

Unbound God’s creation
Has grown into the sinner
Abandoned innocence
Impenitent transgressor
Escape mortality
They say your life can change
If you take God’s hand
Embrace rebirth
Your cleansing’s so divine
To be reborn in God’s eyes

You’ll never touch God’s hand
You’ll never taste God’s breath
Because you’ll never see the second coming
Life’s too short to be focused on insanity
I’ve seen the ways of God
I’ll take the devil any day
Hail Satan

Your faith has atrophied
And rots in hell’s asylum
Despondence tears you down
A free-falling social stain
Escape atrocity
They say your life can change
If you take God’s hand
Embrace rebirth
Your cleansing’s so divine
To be reborn to God’s lies

You’ll never touch God’s hand
You’ll never taste God’s breath
Because you’ll never see the second coming
It’s all a fuckin’ mockery
No grasp upon reality
It’s mind control for
Compulsory religion and the Skeleton Christ

You’ll never touch God’s hand
You’ll never taste God’s breath
Because you’ll never see the second coming
I laugh at the abortion known as Christianity
I’ve seen the ways of God
I’ll take the devil any day
Hail Satan

You’ll never touch God’s hand
You’ll never taste God’s breath
Because you’ll never see the second coming
It’s all a fuckin’ mockery
No grasp upon reality
It’s mind control for
Compulsory religion and the Skeleton Christ

Quality stuff, huh?

Forgetting the fact that I am a Christian who is disturbed by the ideas that Slayer wants to share with their adoring fans, I am struck by the dark, hopeless, pseudo-Marxist “religion is the opiat of the masses” paradigm embraced by these guys. I’m thinking they need to hook up with Gregory S. Paul and Sam Harris and put together a summer tour of college campuses and Starbucks coffee shops.

How generous of them to spread their hopelessness around to the rest of the world.

John Adds: You forgot Celtic Frost! The kings of scandinavian death metal have a new album out as well. It’s called Monotheist.
And if you’ve never witnessed Slayer, here’s a link to one of their live performances on You Tube.
