Billionaires Agree on Plan to Rid Earth of a Billion People

No, I’m not kidding:
SOME of America’s leading billionaires have met secretly to consider how their wealth could be used to slow the growth of the world’s population and speed up improvements in health and education.
The philanthropists who attended a summit convened on the initiative of Bill Gates, the Microsoft co-founder, discussed joining forces to overcome political and religious obstacles to change.
Described as the Good Club by one insider it included David Rockefeller Jr, the patriarch of America’s wealthiest dynasty, Warren Buffett and George Soros, the financiers, Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York, and the media moguls Ted Turner and Oprah Winfrey.
[...]
Gates, 53, who is giving away most of his fortune, argued that healthier families, freed from malaria and extreme poverty, would change their habits and have fewer children within half a generation.
At a conference in Long Beach, California, last February, he had made similar points. “Official projections say the world’s population will peak at 9.3 billion [up from 6.6 billion today] but with charitable initiatives, such as better reproductive healthcare, we think we can cap that at 8.3 billion,” Gates said then.
Masters of the world unite!

So where does it say that they’re going to get rid of a billion people? I’m confused.
May 25, 2009 @ 1:15 pmSo the goal of the billionaires is to cut the impending population peak from 9.3 billion to 8.3 billion, a reduction of one billion people.
To say this is arrogant is putting it mildly.
May 25, 2009 @ 5:27 pmGates should stick to doing his nerdy stuff and leave the problems of the world to our community organizer who has everything planned for planet Earth.
May 25, 2009 @ 7:43 pmI would hardly think that cutting the impending population is ridding the earth of a billion people. An arrogant goal, chyeah, but not the same as ridding the earth of a billion, which would have the connotation of murdering them or shooting them off into space.
If nothing else, it’s a misleading title, imo. But I do agree that it’s quite an arrogant goal, especially if it involves Oprah (just get rid of her and we’ll be better off).
May 26, 2009 @ 12:28 amI have 2 issues with the way the ultra-rich, left looks at the world. The first is that they want to take God out of everything, claiming that science has proved their is no God. Their stance is that Darwin had it right and evolution is how man was created. It is survival of the fittest and man has come out on top over the rest of the animal kingdom. If this is true, why do we care about what happens to people in 3rd world countries? The law of evolution will naturally take care of them. If you save these people from their conditions, aren’t you upsetting the evolutionary order?
The 2nd problem I have is this, they claim they want to provide better food, clothing and living conditions for the impoverished, but why? If the idea is that they will hopefully choose birth control and abortion over reproduction, then what if they choose life rather than death. Let’s say these billionaires achieve the goal of ridding the world of poverty. What if there is a population explosion rather than a decline? Will the billionaires who funded these programs then advocate murdering this population to reduce the number of people in these regions. Will they then pull their funding of these charitable projects, thereby plunging these regions back into disease and poverty ridden status where they came from. Is this charity? Is it compassion?
I prefer to have compassion on the poor because my heart is broken about their plight. In the Bible, Christ is always with the poor and the diseased. He is healing and praying for them. He is compelling others to do the same. He is not engineering some new social order that fits a world agenda. He is simply doing the will of the Father, bringing honor and glory to His name. That is what we are called to do.
May 27, 2009 @ 2:59 amRob, I am hardly ultra-rich, but I will try to answer some of your concerns from a left-wing perspective:
This is a misconception. While some atheists would like to burn the idea of God out of human mythology, Liberals are mostly not atheists and even atheists are, for the most part, all about freedom of (and from) religion. Personally, I would gladly defend your right to believe in whatever religion you have, even as I point at you and laugh for the silly beliefs you may hold. Freedom of religion is one thing. Respect for religion is another. Don’t confuse the two.
So long as you are not using religion to trample the rights of others, I have no quarrel with you.
Current evolutionary psychology theories state that human beings evolved as social animals, and that as a result we developed brain systems for empathy and cooperation. These brain systems cause humans to feel compassion for our fellows. So our desire to help our fellow man is part of the natural order.
Also, the natural order was upset long before liberal politics were even invented. This is a result of consciousness, agriculture and several other technological developments. At the same time, because human beings are part of nature, technology is ALSO a part of nature. Once you give up on the Judeo-Christian idea that man is separate from nature, you begin to realize that all of the creations of man are also not separate from nature. This is a philosophical point, but I want to make it, just to get you thinking a bit.
The upset of the natural order is a consequence of a phase shift in evolution that has occurred several times in the past (for example when blue-green algae gave rise to an oxygen-rich atmosphere). The world will never be the same after human beings. We have yet to learn if consciousness will survive humanity, but that’s beyond the scope of this post.
That depends on how you do it. If all you do is feed people, all you get is more people, and therefore more starvation and famine (paradoxically). On the other hand, many studies have found that the more educated women are, the more stable, and better fed the population is. The reasons for this are complex. Once women start having careers they chose smaller families (with or without abortion), and they stop behaving like breeding machines. The dignity of women is the measure of a civilization IMO.
This is not the only necessary step in ending poverty, but it is an example of how complex problems (like poverty) can sometimes be impacted by indirect solutions (like educating women). This is the sort of intervention that rich billionaires can (and should) do. They have fortunes that exceed the wealth of some nations, it would be immoral for them not to put this to some use to empower people and reduce suffering. Frankly I find Bill Gates to be a better more admerable (and more effective) than Mother Theresa for this reason.
Note that this doesn’t mean that we have to have some kind of central authority – many of these interventions work better WITHOUT a “big brother” approach.
In many ways we are more moral than Jesus was. A controversial point for sure, but just take for example the fact that we don’t support slavery, while he apparently assumed it was the norm. We also have access to technological resources that he would have considered magical. These include statistical and demographic resources that he could not have conceived. In short, we know more than he did, and we live in a more humane and compassionate culture.
So maybe we can do better than he did – what would we be if we didn’t try?
Besides, at the rate we are destroying the ecosystem, it may be a matter of species survival. How embarrassing would it be if we were the ultimate cause of our own destruction? The other space-faring cultures in the universe would point at us and laugh!
June 2, 2009 @ 10:49 amA Billion isn’t enough. We need rid of 6 billion. Any means nrecessary. Germ warfare, nuclear weapons, clubs, bullets, anything will do. Humans are not gods They are not sacred. If anything humans are parasites lower than lice. Humans have put themselves on a pedastel and worship themselves. They now threaten all life on Earth. The sooner they go the better for a better species.
June 25, 2009 @ 6:29 pmWilhelm – are you related to Hitler?
June 26, 2009 @ 1:45 pmI like Willy.
June 26, 2009 @ 10:32 pm“In short, we know more than (Jesus).”????????
August 21, 2009 @ 4:25 pmHE knows how many hairs are on your head!!!
Do you??????!!!
HE knows the second you’re going to DIE!!
Do you?!?!?
And your point about SLAVERY – it WAS the NORM then!!!
The LORD JESUS CHRIST knows Every thought you have EVER thought, which is why the BIBLE says, “There is NONE RIGHTEOUS, No Not One.”
But the GOOD NEWs is that the BIBLE says, “We are the RIGHTEOUSNESS of GOD In HIM” IF we
REPENT of our Wickedness And Call On HIS NAME, for the BIBLE says “Whoever calls on the NAME of the LORD Shall Be SAVED.”
Yes, the BIBLE says, “HE is able to SAVE forever Those Who COME TO GOD Through HIM.” (Hebrews 7:25)
{Sorry I am Not prepared with all the other Scripture references, but I will gladly get them for you, IF you would like!)
So this is how the people we made billionaires plan to repay us? Those same billionaires are the ones who used ponzie schemes and created foods that kill instead of foods that heal.
Bill Gates, the same one that wants to wipe out 1 BILLION people, created the method to spread pornography and did nothing to eliminate it.
In the Old Testiment, there are many kings that “did evil in the eyes of the Lord”. They all were punished here, and will get another dose in eternity.
