David Gregory of NBC news has done it once again. The news cycle once again has come down to the most important thing that there is…him and his needs! Though there is no video (supposedly) of the Tuesday news briefing, everyone seems to agree about the basic exchange/tiff/argument between David Gregory and White House Press Secretary Tony Snow.
According to NewsMax.com, “the two got into the dispute after Gregory told Snow that the public might wonder why the president’s Tuesday report on the war on terror did not admit more failings on the part of his administration. Snow replied that Gregory had nicely summarized “the Democratic point of view,” and Gregory took exception.”
I have no problem with news people asking hard questions of the White House. When Tony Snow was with Fox News, he asked some of the toughest questions of anyone out in the broadcast news field. What I do have a problem with is Gregory and his types of quesitons that aren’t really questions of specificity…they are questions of veiled accusations.
In fact, it has been reported by several other sources including NewsBusters that before asking his “question,” Gregory had gone into a long narrative-type commentary. After Tony Snow made his comment, he and Gregory exchanged heated words back and forth. Gregory’s comments included the priceless:
“Don’t try to dismiss me as making a Democratic argument, Tony, when I’m speaking fact. You can do that to the Democrats; don’t do it to me.”
So in Gregory’s mind, he will not be dismissed or ignored! Hell hath no fury like David Gregory in a snit, I guess.
And this reminds me of the whole Dick Cheney hunting episode last year as well when, once again, Mr. Gregory made it clear what the REAL important issues were…namely that the “important” media (meaning him) hadn’t been notified in a timely manner of the accident.
A memo needs to be circulated to all news makers and shakers around the country…notify David Gregory before anyone else. Otherwise, it could get ugly!
John adds:Gregory had his revenge this morning when he appeared on the Today show and repeated the same accusations of unnamed “critics”:
Critics have a long list of complaints against Rumsfeld. The abuse at Abu Ghraib and his role in advocating tougher treatment of prisoners. Underestimating troop levels for the war. And what critics call his arrogance in the face of bad news, like this response two-years ago to a soldier complaining about inadequate armor.
Would those critics be Democrats? Watch it there, buddy! David Gregory
resents resembles those remarks. But, oh yeah, we don’t have to guess since Gregory started his comments this morning with this:
He’s not on the ballot but Don Rumsfeld is a major target for the Democrats’ anger this fall. In the Senate they want his resignation.
I think that pretty much makes it clear whose bidding David Gregory is doing.
Personally, this is still my favorite David Gregory moment.
