One More Thought On Crime Rates

John on November 8, 2005 at 5:34 pm

In writing our response to Gregory S. Paul’s bogus study, one of the things that consistently surprised me was the very low rate of crime in Japan. As I’ve continued to examine the issue it turns out that crime in Japan has actually soared over the last 10 years. It is still comparatively low, but this article not only documents the rise of crime but suggests that there is some evidence the numbers are being manipulated downward intentionally.

The media revealed that Hyogo Prefectural Police had falsified hundreds of investigation documents over two years, in an apparent attempt to enhance performance ratings by increasing crime-clearance rates. Some officers even fabricated reports on incidents that never even took place. The episode cast a serious shadow over the validity of police claims that crime rates were dropping.
