I was curious about how Democrats might attack Rick Santorum if he winds up as the GOP nominee, so I went digging through Bob Casey’s old campaign web site. Casey defeated Santorum in the 2006 Senate race in Pennsylvania and while this was a horrible year for the GOP in general, there is one issue in particular that jumped out at me that was used to good effect by the Casey campaign, and that has the potential to derail Santorum in a general election campaign against Obama. It’s a quote from Santorum’s 2005 book “It Takes a Family”:
But we parents also have to face the truth. Children of two parents who are working don’t need more things. They need us! In far too many families with young children, both parents are working, when, if they really took an honest look at the budget, they might confess that both of them really don’t need to, or at least may not need to work as much as they do.
Santorum is kinda right about this…and the Left will destroy him for it. As insensitive to the plight of working families, and worse, as a dog whistle to the religious right that he believes a woman’s place is in the home. Fair or not, these attacks will stick, especially in the current economic climate. Even many conservatives will view this as none of his damn business, and it’s frankly the type of social wedge issue that we do not need in an election that should be focused on the economy.
I am going to give Santorum serious consideration, but issues like this make me really worry about his electability.
More. The national media is already on this. ABC dug up a Casey attack ad focusing on the quote from Santorum’s book.
