The votes aren’t quite in yet and the gap is exceedingly narrow (18 votes at present) but I don’t think anyone can doubt that Rick Santorum won Iowa by moving from 6% a few weeks ago to a statistical tie with Mitt Romney. By all accounts he worked hard with very little money on hand to put himself in a position to get this result. As soon as video of his speech is available, I’ll post it here.
Meanwhile, Rick Perry came in 5th and announced he was returning to Texas to reassess his next move. He’s almost certainly going to drop out and you’d have to assume Michele Bachmann will do the same. Huntsman isn’t out yet but he will be if he can’t finish at least 3rd in New Hampshire and that’s not a sure thing.
Santorum’s surge isn’t necessarily going to work in New England and Newt could bounce back a bit. But at least this is down to four now: Mitt, Santorum, Paul and Newt. Maybe there will be a few more surprises before Florida.
