No, not really. At least I don’t think so. But OJ Simpson will be sentenced today for his attempted armed robbery of some collectible dealers. Unfortunately, the 6 years+ he’ll likely get means he’ll be out in 2+ years. Enough for the robbery I suppose, but not nearly enough for the brutal double murder he skated on a decade ago. Then again, bad things happen to people in prison. Maybe a few will happen to him.
And, hey, if he’d committed the murders in Sweden this is roughly the sentence he’d be getting anyway.
SCOTT ADDS: So the sentence was handed down – 16 years…out in 6 (possibly). I guess that breaks down as follows – 7 years for murdering Nichole Simpson, 7 years for murdering Ron Goldman and 2 years for his little adventure in Los Vegas. I wonder if he’ll make it the 6 years?
John Adds: Marcia Clark, who is now working for Entertainment Tonight (covering trials) had this to say:
It has been 13 years to the day since the verdict in the criminal murder trial, when Simpson should have begun serving a sentence of life without parole. Having attended the preliminary hearing and followed the Las Vegas case closely, I believe that the evidence did establish Simpson’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt and I am glad to see that justice has finally been served.
I still don’t think it has been served, but 16 years is a step in the right direction. Here’s hoping he serves all of it. Oh, and there is some confusion about how many years he got. Some say 9 years, some 16, the WSJ is saying 33. In any case, his attorneys plan to appeal claiming it was impossible for him to get a fair trial.
Marcia, if you happen to read this, have a drink on me.
