Iran – Democracy a failure AND No World Cup Soccer for Iranian Women

Have you ever had one of those experiences where two ideas that you are thinking about race around in your brain and then crash into each other like one of those train-to-train collisions in the old silent movies? As I was reading the news today, I had that same experience, but in connection with Iran. The two stories that ran SMACK into each other were:

1) Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reversed an earlier decision he made in April in which he declared that Iranian women would be allowed to publicly view the upcoming World Cup Soccer matches as long as they sat in their own, separate section of the stadium. However, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the religious leader who has the final say, disagreed, which led to President Ahmadinejad’s reversal.

2) ) President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad sent an open letter to President Bush in which he declared, among other things, that “Liberalism and Western-style democracy have not been able to help realize the ideals of humanity Today these two concepts have failed. Those with insight can already hear the sounds of the shattering and fall of the ideology and thoughts of the Liberal democratic systems.”

So, to be sure I understand President Ahmadinejad, Western Democracy is a failure and has been unable to help people around the globe realize the ideals of humanity. Of course, the logical extension of the President’s argument is that a world ruled under Islam and an Islamic-based caliphate DOES have the ability to help people realize the ideals of humanity.

So what would the world look like under an Islamic religious and political system (a caliphate)? Well, let’s see. The world would have the opportunity to experience:

a) the subjugation of women (little or no rights, no jobs, no driving or travel without a male relative’s permission, and of course absolutely NO viewing of professional sports);

b) the oppression and eventual murder of those who disagree with the various political and religious opinions of the caliphate;

c) the elimination of Israel (and Jews in general);

d) world-wide forced indoctrination into Islam;

e) no pork chops, bacon, sausage, or baby-back ribs

WOW! That sounds like utopia to me! Where can I sign up for my free copy of the Koran and a personalized prayer cap?
