No one is going to riot over this, but it is interesting as a symbol of where the left wants to take public debate right now:
This is hand in hand with a plethora of columns, including Paul Krugman’s latest “Free to Die,” which key off one moment in the last GOP debate.
The irony of these attacks seems to have gone unnoticed, at least by Krugman. Democrats spent months decrying the unfairness of “death panels” back in 2009 and equal amounts of energy denouncing Sarah Palin for ever suggesting such a thing. Now it seems in the lead up to the 2012 elections they have become the monster they sought to destroy. Krugman’s column is less pithy, but it boils down to the same kind of attack, i.e. the other party’s policies could be a death sentence.
I don’t think this sort of thing works with moderates very well, especially not with so thin a pretense, but I do think it can have traction among Obama’s base. Will this become Politifact’s lie of the year for 2011? Will anyone in the media even notice the similarity? Don’t hold your breath.
