Equal Opportunity Offenders part 2

Michelle Malkin has the sequel to a post I put up last week. This time it’s the University of Saskatchewan and instead of Jesus and Mohammed making out in the tunnel of tolerance, it’s Jesus in another homo-erotic situation.
Unlike the former cartoon, which at least had a semblance of a point, it’s hard to see what the point of this one is except to be as offensive as possible to Christians. In fact, I warn you not to look unless you’re prepared to be offended. This is the Christian equivalent of the cartoon published in the Middle East recently which showed Anne Frank in bed with Hitler.
Small Dead Animals is covering the reaction. An apology is up on the paper’s website with a lame story that this was somehow a mistake in their editorial process. In any case the editor has now resigned. The President of the University has already let his views be known:
In the February 23 edition of the Sheaf, the editors explained that they would not publish the controversial cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. It is surprising that they did not exercise similar restraint in their decision to publish ‘Capitalist Piglet’ in the March 2 issue of the paper. This is a cartoon that is certain to cause distress to members of our community. It has divisive shock value only and does nothing to advance the understanding or debate for which universities should be distinguished.
The Sheaf should apologize to us all.
Peter MacKinnon
President
In case you were wondering, this same student paper (The Sheaf) refused to run the Jyllands-Posten cartoons on the grounds that they were needlessly offensive. What a complete double standard they seem to have discovered. Nor is this the first time they’ve gone after Christianity. Check out this cartoon published in an earlier issue of the same paper titled “Too Many Christians, Not Enough Lions.” [Correction: this strip was printed in another campus paper called The Muse not the Sheaf.]
Update: The Sheaf has now removed the cartoons from its online pdf version of the paper. Scrubbed from existence. Still in the recent issue is this important article encouraging everyone to go see the vagina monologues. Why am I not surprised.
Update 3/9: Don’t miss the follow-up post on the cartoonists response to the firestorm.

If you pull your head out of your ass for a minute to check your facts The Sheaf never did publish the “…too many lions” cartoon…
Oops! I guess you rant better then you research!
March 9, 2006 @ 3:50 pmInteresting choice of metaphor…I guess this is your type of cartoon.
I’ve added the correction above. Another student paper, The Muse, published the Too Many Lions cartoon. Re: the Sheaf the point still stands given that they published two other Christian baiting cartoons in the same issue as the piglet cartoon.
But, hey, come back when you have something worthwhile to say…
March 9, 2006 @ 5:41 pmI hate to sound defensive (or offensive as the case may be), but me thinks that “Jesus” protests too much! Perhaps HE needs to pull HIS head out of HIS ass and:
1) Recognize that mistakes happen, so there’s no need to get verbally abusive when dealing with an issue in which information is fluid (and a lot of information connected to this issue is unfolding by the minute)
2) Acknowledge that all other information/facts in this posting are accurate, so the point of the post stands
3) Hope that the next time HE makes a mistake doing or saying something there isn’t some jackass standing behind him to scold with a gentle – “HEY! Pull your head out of your ass. Fix your mistake you moron.”
Or perhaps that’s how poor “Jesus” was raised at home.
Sad. :-(
March 9, 2006 @ 6:22 pmWhile “capitalist piglet” could be deemed offensive, it’s hardly anything new. Penny Arcade has featured Jesus prominently in any number of their comics, and there has been no prominent hue or outcry, despite the distinctly apocryphal flavour of the comics. Granted, none of the comics were as offensive as this one, but it’s just a natural progression.
Still in the recent issue is this important article encouraging everyone to go see the vagina monologues. And what precisely is wrong with that? I went to see them when they were featured at UBC – it was an excellent, entertaining and enlightening production. What precisely do you object to about the show? You deem it lewd and obscene? Fine. Don’t go see it. But don’t spoil it for others on your own personal narrow-minded grounds.
March 13, 2006 @ 4:32 pmJames,
What do I object to? Nothing at all. In fact I find VM a little tame. Personally, I prefer Aristophanes’ Lysistrata, the poetry of Sappho or, in a pinch, the original Deep Throat with Linda Lovelace.
Of course for pure entertainment it’s hard to beat “Butt Babes 3: Revenge of the Thong.” Talk about enlightenment! Some people call it porn, but I prefer “adult entertainment.”
So don’t worry, James, nobody here but us open-minded, porn-lovin’ metrosexuals.
Viva Vagina!
