Steve Benen in the Washington Monthly, and various other left-wing bottom feeders, are using the video I posted earlier of Jon Huntsman talking about a health insurance mandate to claim that Huntsman lied to the press while commenting on this issue earlier this month. I think this is grossly unfair to Huntsman. Prior to writing my earlier post, I searched extensively for any recent comments Huntsman has made about the individual mandate. The only statement I found appeared in the Huffington Post article which started all of this where Huntsman was quoted only as saying:
“I didn’t push mandates with the legislature. You want to get that right.”
From everything I’ve gathered at this point, including the Huffington Post’s reporting, this appears to be an accurate statement as I have not seen any evidence that Huntsman pushed for, or even continued to support the inclusion of a mandate once it became clear that it did not have enough support in the Utah legislature.
Is Benen aware of any other statements Huntsman has made denying that he ever supported a mandate? If not, he owes Huntsman a retraction and an apology.
I’ve certainly offered my share of criticism about a potential Huntsman campaign, but I have not seen or read anything, even from detractors, which would call into question his integrity. As I have said elsewhere, though he is clearly not my first choice, I will have no reservations about supporting Huntsman in 2012 if he is the GOP nominee.
