Well, you have to admire his honesty. Asked by an unknown progressive blogger about charges that OFA and other groups were Astroturfing Wisconsin protests, Trumka doesn’t deny it. His response: “So what?” He goes on to say that this situation has really galvanized solidarity among all progressive groups:
On one hand, he’s right that you can “organize” all day long. If people don’t want to take the time to come to your event, they won’t come. But of course that sort of thing wasn’t nearly good enough for progressive bloggers of the type at this meeting. Freedom works spent about $20K organizing hundreds of protests nationwide in 2009 and this was called Astroturf by everyone from Nancy Pelosi on down. I bet Trumka and his posse spent more than that in one weekend in Wisconsin.
As if unable to see their own double standard, several times in this conversation the bloggers bring up the claim that the Koch brothers are behind the Tea Party counter-protests. So it’s one standard for the pro-union forces and a completely different one for the Tea Party. When we (OFA, AFL-CIO) do it, it’s a big “so what?” When the other guys do it, it’s absolutely Machiavellian.
