Four more churches in Alabama have been targeted, apparently by the same arsonist who burned five churches last week. Three of the buildings burned down and one survived. While the majority of the churches burned in last week’s attack were caucasian congregations, all of the fires set yesterday were at african-american churches. I think this pretty much rules out a racial motivation in the crimes.
The damaged areas include the pulpit, communion table, the American flag and the carpeting surrounding those areas.
The inclusion of the flag surprises me. In any case, it seems increasingly likely that the arsonist is delivering a specifically anti-Christian message. Exactly what motivates him (or them) remains to be seen, but it seems likely to be one of two things:
- Militant atheism
- Militant Islamism
Of course it’s still possible the culprit is an angry deacon, but I suspect we’ll soon learn that wasn’t the case.
