From the Wall Street Journal:
An abortion doctor who catered to minorities, immigrants and poor women was charged with eight counts of murder in the deaths of a patient and seven babies who were born alive and then killed with scissors, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 69, made millions of dollars over 30 years, performing as many illegal, late-term abortions as he could, prosecutors said. State regulators ignored complaints about him and failed to visit or inspect his clinic since 1993, but no charges were warranted against them, District Attorney Seth Williams said.
Dr. Gosnell “induced labor, forced the live birth of viable babies in the sixth, seventh, eighth month of pregnancy and then killed those babies by cutting into the back of the neck with scissors and severing their spinal cord,” Mr. Williams said.
Three points about this story. First, if this guy was in business 30 years, I sincerely doubt that he only did this 7 times. The article says 9 of his staff are in custody. Perhaps one of them will roll over on him and we’ll find out just how many helpless infants this guy has actually murdered over the years.
Second, note that this is almost identical to the partial birth abortion procedure. Dr. Gosnell simply killed the babies outside the birth canal, making it unnecessary to vacuum out their skulls before completing the birth. This technicality shouldn’t obscure the fact that both acts are infanticide. Both acts have one aim, which is to kill a live infant. One is just more convenient for the “doctor.”
Third, the MSM has spent a lot of energy so far in 2011 discussing the connection between political rhetoric and murder. I predict that will abruptly stop, at least in relation to this case. Sure, it’s the left that overwhelmingly supports the barbaric enterprise of abortion, including late term abortion and partial-birth abortion. It’s the left that argues stabbing infants with scissors is a protected right under the rubric of “choice.” It’s the left wing-media that lionizes the practitioners of these procedures, especially the ones that do late term abortions. And sure, the right has been fighting this for over 35 years, trying like hell to ban procedures not very different from this. But, hey, let’s not inject politics into murder.
We won’t be having any soul-searching national discussion about these murders this week. The networks (if they cover this case at all) won’t assign blame to one side of the aisle, much less a particular individual. After spending an entire week speculating about crosshairs on a map which the Arizona shooter almost certainly never saw, the same reporters will bend over backwards to avoid any connection between the left’s zeal for late term abortions and the grisly work of Dr. Gosnell. What do you call a lone gunman who uses scissors? That’s what he’ll be.
If the left wants us to believe political rhetoric can lead to mass murder, consider me convinced.
Update: Ed at Hot Air is reading the grand jury report and is repulsed by what he finds there. For instance:
The State Legislature has charged the Department of Health (DOH) with responsibility for writing and enforcing regulations to protect health and safety in abortion clinics as well as in hospitals and other health care facilities. Yet a significant difference exists between how DOH monitors abortion clinics and how it monitors facilities where other medical procedures are performed.
Indeed, the department has shown an utter disregard both for the safety of women who seek treatment at abortion clinics and for the health of fetuses after they have become viable. State health officials have also shown a disregard for the laws the department is supposed to enforce. Most appalling of all, the Department of Health’s neglect of abortion patients’ safety and of Pennsylvania laws is clearly not inadvertent: It is by design.
The report doesn’t go this far but I will. These murders are not the result of a failure of the left’s abortion zealotry but of its success.
