Iran’s President on the Cartoons

John on February 3, 2006 at 11:01 pm

Iran Daily reports that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke with King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia by phone to discuss the cartoon situation. Here’s the key paragraph:

Such insulting moves, which are against ethical and human principles, are aimed at testing the reaction by Muslims and their countries, Ahmadinejad said. He noted that if Muslims do not respond appropriately, similar moves will be repeated.

The article doesn’t spell out what “respond appropriately” means, but my guess is they’re not talking about writing a stern letter.

In what’s billed as a related story, the same piece mentions that Iran’s Foreign Minister is calling an emergency meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference.

The Iranian minister proposed an emergency session of OIC foreign ministers to discuss issues behind such “organized assault” on the Islamic world.

Conspiracy theory? More saber rattling? Or do they have something else in mind? Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu (trying saying that three times fast at all), Secretary-General of the OIC, “stressed the Islamic nations will not tolerate such insulting acts…”

Where is Jack Bauer when we need him?
