Lyrics for a Sunday

Scott on July 6, 2008 at 11:43 pm

Last Sunday I had the chance to sing at the church of one of my best friends.  He and I have done music together, on and off, for upwards of 24 years.  Anyhow, he asked me to come and sing at the “traditional service” at the church where he is on staff.  I can’t remember when the last time was that I was in a traditional service.  It has been years.  That being said, this church really does it right.  A great pianist, a great organist, engaging ministers and staff up on stage, a good choir.  All in all, they do the traditional thing right.

Anyhow, my friend asked me to sing a song that he and I have done so often that I can’t even remember how many times it has been.  I hadn’t thought of the song for quite a while, but as I ran through the lyrics last week I was hit by how powerful they are.  This has been a trying time for many of us.  Turmoil and injustice at our old church make it difficult to just sit back.  More than anything, I want to see fairness and justice done.  This song reminded me of where my focus needs to be.  It is taken from Psalm 46:10-11 – Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.  The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. It’s a song from the early 80′s by the Imperials called “Be Still My Soul:”

Surrounded by the cares of life,
Situations rise, they press against my soul.
Desperate thoughts have blocked me in,
Feels like I may lose control.

A voice from somewhere inside me,
Brings comfort, fills my heart with courage.
That lets me know
that everything will be all right.

I hear him say Be still my soul and know that he is God,
He is God Stand quietly, He is The Lord.

If God is for me who can be against me?
He is God
Be still my soul, He is The Lord.

Teach me Lord, to stay with you,
When my emotions try to rule me,
Remind me Lord, of who I am,
And show me what you want me to be.

His great strength, and confidence,
Knowing that You are with me,
I’m not afraid of tomorrow,
What waits ahead.

I hear him say Be still my soul and know that he is God,
He is God Stand quietly, He is The Lord.
If God is for me who can be against me?
He is God
Be still my soul, He is The Lord.

Be still my soul

He is The Lord.

He is The Lord.
