Japan, Australia and Britain to Exit Iraq

John on January 30, 2006 at 3:18 pm

Well, not completely. Japan has just announced that they will be pulling forces out of southern Iraq this May.

The story doesn’t give a great deal of detail, other than to say that the US agreed. Is this a sign of progress? Is this a hint about what will be in the President’s State of the Union?

Stay tuned…

Update: Apparently this move has been contemplated since September 2005.

Update 2: Another story, this one from the Japan Times confirms it. Apparently the timetable was reached at a secret meeting which included representatives from all four nations on Jan. 23rd. Britain will be redeploying some of its troops to Afghanistan.
