Going to Church Saves Marriages

That’s the headline that should be on this piece at Live Science today. Instead, they flip the news on its head with a terrible headline, Prayer No Guarantee Against Adultery. They similarly bury the lede in the story itself, which begins:

Strong faith in God is by itself no recipe for fidelity with a spouse. Close to the Almighty? You may not have a prayer.

Of course this assumes that it’s possible to be “close to the almighty” as a solo act. Just you and God out on the prairie…or whatever. Christianity is never described this way in the Bible. The idea of a “lone ranger” Christian is absurd. The real news finally comes in the second paragraph:

Just go to church, or synagogue, mosque or temple. That could keep you faithful on more than one level, a new study suggests.

The new research coming out of Fuller Theological Seminary confirms the results of Princeton sociologist W. Bradford Wilcox, which I wrote about here. Wilcox also found that attendance correlated with marital happiness. Contrary to the speculation in the Live Science piece, I suspect this is one major reason for the difference, i.e. happy couples are less likely to divorce.
