I enjoyed 24 while it lasted. I had a feeling it was in trouble last season when Jack Bauer was suddenly “conflicted” over the use of torture. Then I heard the producers had scrapped an entire season concept on the eve of production only to start over with a new concept and push the show’s start date back several months. I knew things were getting really bad when the new improved concept finally got underway with Janeane Garofalo as Jack’s protege’.
Talk about torture.
Real life seemed to be against the show as well. Kiefer Sutherland was sent to jail for drunk driving followed by a writer’s strike that made it impossible to shoot more than eight episodes.
Well, now the fat lady has finally sung. Joel Surnow, the creator and one of the few conservative voices in Hollywood, has left the show. No doubt he had something to say about the show’s leftward slide in his exit interview. What I wouldn’t give to be a fly on the wall at that meeting.
The end result of all of this is that the remaining producers of 24 have decided not to air the 8 episodes they have in the can. Instead they’re going to wait until January 2009. When the next season starts, it’ll have been 20 months since anyone saw Jack Bauer. This is one fan who probably won’t care by that point.
Here’s a free tip from a former would be writer for the producers at 24. Unless next season starts with Jack Bauer removing Janeane Garofalo’s spleen with a claw hammer just because…I’m not watching anymore.
