And You Thought People in the U.S. were Ignorant?!?

Scott on February 4, 2008 at 1:29 pm

We hear a lot about how woefully ignorant the general population of the U.S. is in terms of history, geography, etc. And I grant that there is some truth to this.

I guess it’s just nice to know that the U.S. citizenry isn’t the only group walking around slack-jawed and glassy-eyed!

The U.K.’s London Daily Mail is reporting that 1 in 4 Britons do NOT believe that Winston Churchill was a real person. Other figures in doubt of historical veracity include: Mahatma Gandhi, Cleopatra, Charles Dickens and the Duke of Wellington.

At the same time, it turns out that a majority of Britons believe that the following fictional characters were actually real:  Sherlock Holmes, Eleanor Rigby and Robinson Crusoe!
