With the election yesterday of Hamas as the new Palestinian governing party, I think it’s time to take stock of where we are.
Hamas’ popularity stems from one thing, resistance to Israel. Resistance that takes the form of gunfights and suicide bombings. Essentially what we saw yesterday was a vote of confidence for these tactics. Hamas has no intention of making peace. They want Israel’s total destruction.
Meanwhile, Syria has been busy. Besides sending munitions and fighters across the border into Iraq to kill US servicemen, the Syrians have also been busy killing their own government ministers to cover up their various crimes.
Then there’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, President of Iran. He’s been in the news recently for three reasons.
- He’s trying to build a nuclear bomb.
- He’s been talking about the end of the world, specifically a form of Islamic eschatology which sounds like Left Behind on steroids.
- He’s on record recently as doubting the holocaust.
I think Newt Gingrich summed Ahmadinejad up nicely when he described him as the new Hitler. (That will be contested by the Daily Kos crowd who are convinced President Chimpy McHitlerburton owns that title, but I digress).
And here in this story we see that all three of these groups came together recently for a little planning session. Ahmadinejad (Iran) traveled to Damascus (Syria) where met with leaders of Hamas (Palestine). (He also met seperately with Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah). At the former meeting, he is reported to have:
[P]ledged support for militant Palestinian factions at a meeting with leaders from Islamic Jihad and Hamas. Ahmadinejad has said Israel should be “wiped off the map.
I don’t want to veer into Pat Robertson territory here, but I think we have a newly constituted axis of evil. If I had to guess, I’d say that the mad mullahs have decided that Sharon’s stroke was an act of God signaling that it’s time for them to do something. In any case, you know things are serious when France’s own Jacques Chirac is making not so subtle nuclear threats toward Iran.
Forget about taking the military option off the table, it’s time to start thinking about which military option we can accept. What we should not do is follow the advice of this man, who says we need to start funding the new Hamas government.
Update: Michelle Malkin has a roundup of blogger reaction to the Hamas win.
Update 2: Sounds like the administration has already been rattling the saber with the help of Pakistan. I’d not read about this previously but it seems we let Iran know that air strikes were on the table.
Update 3: Scott points out his post from 12/14/05 discussing Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his hatred of the U.S., hatred of Israel, and his strange connection to the teachings of U.S. skinheads.
