Here’s his thesis from yesterday’s column:
So virulent is the Islamophobic hysteria of the neocon and Fox News right…that it has also rendered Gen. David Petraeus’s last-ditch counterinsurgency strategy for fighting the war inoperative. How do you win Muslim hearts and minds in Kandahar when you are calling Muslims every filthy name in the book in New York?
This line of thought isn’t remotely original. Compare it to this line from Peter Beinart’s piece for the Daily Beast several days earlier:
People in Basra and Kandahar had better hope that America’s counterinsurgency warriors create a society in which they can practice their religion free of intimidation and insult. Because it’s now clear they can’t do so on the lower tip of the island of Manhattan.
Beinart says: If our soldiers succeed in Afghanistan it will be more free than Manhattan.
Rich says: Our soldiers can’t succeed in Afghanistan because of the Islamaphobia directed at Manhattan.
It’s not plagiarism, but it’s not original either. How much does this guy get paid to crib other people’s ideas?
As for his point…(Beinart’s point). How does the act of exercising first amendment rights to free speech about the mosque/center decrease our overall level of freedom? No one on the left seems to have an answer for that one.
