It is with great pride and attendant fanfare that I announce Verum Serum will henceforth be issuing its own prestigious award named after senior White House correspondent and Israel-hating crone Helen Thomas.
Each year starting on May 11th, the date of modern Israel’s founding, my co-bloggers and I will nominate those bloggers, journalists, or news organizations who have displayed the most egregious anti-Israel bias over the previous year. We will also accept nominations by link submission in the comments.
Finally, on June 11th, the editors will announce the winner of the coveted Helen Thomas award. The winning blogger, journalist, or institution will be sent a sidebar badge which they can proudly display on their website.
Because this is the first such award and our June 11th deadline is upon us, I’m going to introduce three four nominees. Others may be added over the coming days before the June 11th deadline:
- The Huffington Post offers this piece by Phyllis Bennis:
Israeli commandoes murdered nine humanitarian aid workers in international waters. Nine were Turkish citizens; one a U.S. citizen. They wounded scores more. They imprisoned hundreds, and impounded the ships they hijacked on the high seas. Someone asked me the question: will they get away with it? So far, I answered, they HAVE gotten away with it. And if history repeats itself, if nothing changes, they will continue to get away with it. Our job is to change history.
- Reuters for their shameless attempt to crop photos so that “peace activists” holding knives over bloodied IDF soldiers aren’t part of the image of the flotilla raid.
- Al Jazeera published this piece by UC Irvine professor Mark LeVine:
We “defend” Israel from every criticism – “No! It doesn’t have a problem!” “It’s the only democracy in the region!” “We stand with Israel!” – really, we stand beside Israel, give it some more “brown-brown” (cocaine mixed with gun powder) to snort, hand it some new weapons and send it out to kill and oppress some more, in our name.
- The Guardian‘s associate editor Michael White was being interviewed on the BBC about political violence when he had this to say:
In Israel they murder each other a great deal. The Israeli Defense Forces murder people because they don’t like their political style and what they’ve got to say and it only means that people more extreme come in and take their place.
