For Mother’s Day, the family decided to do a movie and then lunch. The movie that won the vote was Disney’s OCEANS. And I just gotta say that it was really, REALLY good…bordering on awesome! If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. Think PLANET EARTH…but on a ginormous television.
I went in with a bit of trepidation, expecting some heavy-handed narration that would go WAY HEAVY on global warming guilt, but I was pleasantly surprised. Global Warming was mentioned once, but even then not in any sort of finger-pointingly awkward way. They touched on pollution and probably could have hit that a bit harder. The footage is so impressive and mesmerizing that, even if there had been no narration, I think the audience would just watch the film accompanied by the musical score alone.
Overall, I think the narration was the weakest part of the film. At times the writers seemed to want to communicate a narrative, and at others they seemed to want to inform. In both respects, they missed the boat a bit.
Even with that, I say go see it. Take the kids…and the grandparents…and anyone else who wants to go. Afterward I guarantee some good discussion about the “coolest” parts, the most amusing animals, the most awe-inspiring sights, etc.
