500 Sex Offenders Released In CA; No One Tracking Them

John on October 19, 2007 at 11:34 pm

Here’s the video story from local TV station KGET. Here’s the related print version:

There’s confusion over who is supposed to be watching sex offenders in our state. The state said it released 550 rapists and molesters from parole over the last several months and not a single one is being monitored.

They’re put in prison and sometimes paroled, and according to voters who passed Jessica’s Law last year, if and when sex offenders hit the streets again, they are supposed to be monitored for life.

The problem is Jessica’s Law is hundreds of pages long, but doesn’t detail how sex offenders tracking should happen.

The missing details include which sex offenders need to be tracked, who is responsible for that tracking and who will pay for it.

If people make enough noise, state politicians may decide to work out the details. Here’s the page where you can e-mail the Governor Schwarzenegger.

I sent an e-mail noting the story and asking for a response detailing what is being done to rectify the situation. For those who prefer the direct approach, here’s the Guv’s phone number in Sacramento:  (916) 445-2841 and here’s the Los Angeles office:  (213) 897-0322. If anyone gets a response, be sure to post it below.
