I’m a huge fan of Buddy Holly. Not just the Weezer song (which is great) but the man himself. So it’s hard for me not to geek out a bit over some of the stuff that is going up for auction next month in Hollywood. Have a look:
You have no idea how much I want that red jacket. Seriously, can you imagine walking into a party or social event wearing Buddy’s jacket? Could there be anything cooler? Any better armor against the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune? I think not.
But the real treasure is that last item. A one-off acetate demo of six songs buddy recorded as demos just a few months before his untimely death. It’s just Buddy and a guitar prepping material for an album that, sadly for all of us, never came.
Actually, a record company did release several of the songs for a completist collection which was produced not long ago. But one song has never been produced or officially released. Here it is thanks to the miracle of bootlegging. It’s called That’s What They Say. Tell me this wasn’t another top 10 hit waiting to break upon the land in 1959. Let’s be honest, it’s better than 99% of what’s on the radio now.
There’s a lot of other amazing memorabilia in this auction, which takes place April 9-11 in Hollywood. Superman’s cape is on the block and lots of rare autographed items and handwritten letters. I may have to take a trip up there next weekend just to see some of it up close, especially that red jacket.
