Novel About Obama’s Childhood in Indonesia Released

This ought to be interesting

Indonesian novelist and painter Damien Dematra Monday launched a novel entitled Obama Anak Menteng, or The Menteng’s Kid Obama, which tells about President US Barack Obama’s childhood in the country.

Obama spent four years of his childhood in the district of Menteng, Central Jakarta, a few decades ago.

Damien said that the novel comprises testimonies of Obama’s friends while he was little.

The author seems to be a relatively accomplished Indonesian writer and artist. Although given that his┬áprevious works include a novel entitled “By Allah, I Was a Terrorist” (more benign than it sounds), it’s probably a safe bet that this is an unauthorized biography of the President’s early years. And in spite of the image used on the cover, this is not a children’s picture book – apparently it’s over 200 pages long.

This is all water under the bridge now as far as I am concerned, but it is pretty interesting that an Indonesian writer can track down childhood playmates of Obama’s from over 40 years ago, yet apparently no American writer has been able to locate any of his friends from college or his early days as a community organizer. I guess he was so busy studying and uh…organizing…that he didn’t have much of a social life. That must be it.
