His name was John Patrick Bedell and he was 36. He died of his wounds earlier tonight.
His motive is still not clear, but he was part of the 9/11 Truther movement. Patterico has a roundup, including this bit of crazy:
This organization, like so many murderous governments throughout history, would see the sacrifice of thousands of its citizens in an event such as the September 11 attacks, as a small cost in order to perpetuate its barbaric control.
He goes on to suggest that there is a “coup regime” which took power in the 60s with the murder of JFK. So, he’s not just a Truther, he seems to be suggesting everything from Kennedy to the Iraq war is all one ongoing conspiracy. His solution is less government control of the economy.
Fox also reports that he was particularly upset over marijuana laws. Here’s the felony complaint and here is an associated page of photos of Bedell’s stash, plus a photo of him in custody (click for full size):
This guy doesn’t exactly fit into one box or the other. He’s libertarian to the point of sounding almost Randian. On the other hand, he’s a Bush hater, a Truther and buys into the grassy knoll theory about JFK.
Bedell may have had his own unique niche, but I suspect the NY Times will be calling him the 2nd tea-party terrorist anyway.
Morgen adds: He was definitely an extreme libertarian, at least as evidenced by his blog at rothbardix.blogspot.com which has been inactive since 1996. He also seems to have been a big fan of the Mises Institute, which describes itself as the “world center of the Austrian School of economics and libertarian political and social theory”.
So in spite of his apparent 9/11 Truther and anti-Bush views, expect liberal bloggers if not the MSM to seize on his libertarian political views and try to associate him with the Tea Party movement.
Of course like Joe Stack, he can most accurately be described as a lunatic, and neither of them appear to have been associated with any organized political movements, right or left.
Just one more link for now – someone has already removed his Wikipedia user page (perhaps a knee-jerk liberal’s reaction to his 9/11 statement). For the time being at least, you can read a copy of this page on the Google cache here.
Also…Bedell was definitely a really, really big fan of marijuana.
