Well, Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Vick has pleaded guilty to dog fighting and animal cruelty. He threw himself on the mercy of the court and came out and made a public apology which you can view here.
During his apology Vick stated that he had “found Jesus” and turned his life over to God. As always, I don’t want to make light of someone’s heartfelt conversion experience. Michael Vick is certainly someone in need of some help and some consolation. That said, it’s hard not to think of this as a publicity stunt. As with the sudden conversion of Paris Hilton a few months ago, the timing is just a bit curious.
If Vick is sincere, the first thing he needs to do is learn some of the basics. He concludes his apology with the words “I will redeem myself. I have to.” The Christian perspective, of course, is that redemption is not something one does for oneself. An honest mistake possibly.
Finally, given the cruelty of Vick’s crimes against helpless animals, I can’t help but laugh at this suggestion from another blogger:
“Through this situation I found Jesus and asked him for forgiveness and have turned my life over to God.” Ah, yes. The Jesus defense. Very well, then. I hope Jesus calls on St. Francis of Assisi to hear the appeal.
Francis might prescribe a few years as a mendicant monk. The change from multi-millionaire celebrity might do Vick good.
