As the talks between representatives of the US and Iran continue, the real action is heating up all over Iraq. Even as Iran’s mouthpieces swear up and down they want peace in the region, a group of 50 Quds Force members were sneaking into southern Iraq to train militia members how to kill American troops:
Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch, whose command includes the volatile southern rim of Baghdad and districts to the south, said his troops are tracking about 50 members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps in their area – the first detailed allegation that Iranians have been training fighters within Iraq’s borders.
“We know they’re here and we target them as well,” he said, citing intelligence reports as evidence of their presence.
Lynch, whose mission is to block the flow of weapons and fighters into the Baghdad area, said Sunni and Shiite extremists have become increasingly aggressive this month, trying to influence the debate in Washington before a pivotal progress report on Iraq.
Meanwhile, things are getting even hotter in the north or Iraq where Iran has deployed “thousands” of Revolutionary Guards in recent weeks:
Jabar Yawar, a deputy minister in the Kurdistan regional government, said four days of intermittent shelling by Iranian forces had hit mountain villages high up on the Iraqi side of the border, wounding two women, destroying livestock and property, and displacing about 1,000 people from their homes. Mr Yawer said there had also been intense fighting on the Iraqi border between Iranian forces and guerrillas of the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK), an armed Iranian Kurdish group that is stepping up its campaign for Kurdish rights against the theocratic regime in Tehran.
According to the rest of the article, PJAK is the fastest growing militant group in the region. Iran believes the US is putting them up to it. I hope so. Why wouldn’t we want to see the overthrow of a theocratic dictator who wants to wipe Israel off the map and who is working like crazy to build a nuclear bomb? No worries though, the UN is on the case. What a relief.
