Funny how being a parent changes your perspective on news stories like this one: James Alton Barbour Jr., a six year old boy with his whole life ahead of him, drowned on July 7th after saving his three year old sister Alona.
Somehow the two ended up in their grandparents half-drained swimming pool, where James pushed his sister into the shallowest area where she could stand in 12 inches of water until rescue could arrive. Somehow this brave, young hero went back under the water and wasn’t able to get to the shallow part of the pool to stand with his sister.
Even now I can feel a lump in my throat as I think of the grief this family must be going through. I can’t help but hope that up in Heaven the Lord was able to show James what a brave, amazing thing he did and maybe give him a glimpse of how his sister’s life will turn out as a result of his sacrifice.
I can’t help but think of Jesus’ words in John 15:13 – “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay his life down for his friends.”
Way to go, James! Way to go!
I hope I can be just like you and demonstrate that kind of love and courage throughout the rest of my life.
