You may or may not have heard that today, Apple is supposed to be making a big announcement about its much-anticipated tablet. Over the last couple weeks I’ve been amused as I listened to the breathless discussions speculating as to the look, feel, taste and such of this new and upcoming Apple innovation. As I was reading a tech blog yesterday and chuckling over one person’s comment that just as Apple changed how we listened to music, they will now change how the world interfaces with technology, I heard the song “Aquarius” from the musical “Hair” running through my mind…
When the moon is in the Seventh House…And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets…And love will steer the stars
This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius
The age of Aquarius! Aquarius! Aquarius!
Harmony and understanding…Sympathy and trust abounding
No more falsehoods or derisions…Golden living dreams of visions
Mystic crystal revelation…And the mind’s true liberation
I guess it IS possible that Apple will be responsible for ushering in an era of peace and tranquility like the world has never known…but more likely they will be responsible for simply envisioneering innovation that others will build on, which will in turn encourage the continued evolution of technology.
While I don’t think the Apple tablet (iTablet or iSlate perhaps) will change the world, I do think it could be a pretty cool innovation that opens things up in a world of technology that has been kind of stagnant for the last few years.
The tech blog GIZMODO had a concept contest in which they challenged people to come up with speculative designs for the soon-to-be-unveiled Apple tablet.
Here is the winner:
Here was my favorite simply because, for anyone who remembers the Newton, it is a reminder that Apple makes mistakes and sometimes does things badly:
Fox news took some of the best ones and turned them into a slideshow. Some of the designs look pretty cool!
UPDATE: So the “iPad” has been unveiled. If it can deliver on the promises made by Steve Jobs at the announcement, and it probably will deliver, then the iPad might very well change a lot about how we interface with technology at home, work, school, etc… According to Fox News, the iPad will influence gaming, video (both watching and editing), ebooks, web-based applications, etc.
John Adds: I think it’s cool, but I’m afraid I might look really dorky holding that up to my ear to make a call. If they could only make a smaller version…[I keed. I keed.]
Oh, the Apple website now has a live page for the iPad. There’s a video you can watch too. I think I’m most impressed by the pricing so far.
