The scale of the damage is pretty stunning.
Here is the daily UN report on the situation (pdf). They do not have a handle on the scale of this yet, but arrangements are already being made to ship in massive amounts of food and supplies from a staging area in Panama.
I’ve decided to make a donation toward the relief effort. I hope some of you will join me (if you haven’t preceded me). Some options for donations:
- Red Cross – You can donate via the website or by calling 1-800-733-2767. They also have a cell phone donation scheme. If you text “Haiti” to 90999, $10 will be charged on your phone bill and given to the Red Cross.
- The Salvation Army is already committing $50K and more than 20 tons of food aid to Haiti. They have a blog about their efforts here. They are accepting donations here.
- World Vision is a Christian aid and relief group that is already shipping 18 tons of supplies to Haiti.
I suspect a number of the larger churches will be mobilizing as well. I’ll add updates if I learn of any specific efforts.
