A Preview of Things to Come

gaza.jpgSince Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, it has been under the control of Fatah security forces aligned with Palestinian Authority and President Mahmoud Abbas. Because Abbas has called for non-violence against Israel he is considered a moderate or even a liberal.

In the last several days, Hamas, the current governing party, has attempted to take over the Gaza strip. Twenty four people were killed in fighting yesterday. Large bombs were detonated in several place and what can only be described as terrorism was unleashed on civilians:

On Wednesday afternoon, Hamas forces entered the area and led hundreds of men, women and children, their hands raised behind their heads, to a nearby mosque, said local resident, Nael Ghoben.

Witnesses reported that after the surrender, two Bakr women tried to leave the area and take a sick girl to a hospital, and were shot on the street by Hamas gunmen.

In Gaza City, a civilian was killed Wednesday when some 1,000 Palestinians marched through the streets chanting “stop the killing” – only to draw gunfire from Hamas militants at a nearby police station seized from Fatah a day earlier.

Gaza itself is a very small but well populated area which is home to about 1.4 million people. Once Hamas has seized control, it will become a base of operations for continued attacks on Israel, something which Hamas has always had as its prime objective.

Now take this scenario — Western power pulls back, sectarian fighting leads extremists to take control killing anyone who stands in their way — and imagine it on a grand scale. This is exactly what we’ll be seeing in Iraq if Harry Reid and Jack Murtha get their way.

The pullback being advocated by Democrats on grounds of ongoing death in Iraq will unwittingly unleash death on a scale we haven’t seen in Iraq before. Once we abandon Iraq, the death toll will go from 100 soldiers a month (and several hundred insurgents) to several hundred people a day. And just as Hamas control of Gaza will lead to attacks on Israel, Iraq in the hands of Moqtada al Sadr or even Osama bin Laden will become a base of operations for attacks on the US and Britain.

What we have in Gaza right now is a preview of things to come. Maybe we can learn something from that before it really is too late.
