Environmentalism as a Substitute Religion

These people really love nature. In fact, they worship nature. They even make confession of sins to nature:

About half of this comes off as parody, but Ben Barack, who sent this to me, notes this group has a real website.

Hmmm…one of their big issues is hemp. It’s all making more sense now.

I remember once seeing a picture of “Spotted Owl” Gore genuflecting before a tree squirrel. He then tried convincing the squirrel that he invented the Internet. After a brief moment, some men in white medical garb escorted Mr. Gore back into a padded minivan. It looked like the straitjacket was comfortable. All in all, I think Al was having a good day.

The hemp thing is interesting. A local farmer tried it as a test crop in a couple of small fields – apparently it has absolutely no narcotic properties, but vast, untapped potential at a much lower environmental and economic cost than cotton. But there’s no market for it. People assume it will be a bit hippyish, unfashionable and kinda funny looking, all of which are wrong, but added to the ‘put it in your bong and smoke it’ thing, it just can’t get started. Hemp is very last noughties, though, the latest thing is bamboo clothing.
