Rahm Emmanuel Holds Gun to Military Base to Force Nelson’s Vote

This is the most disturbing, disgusting act I’ve seen in this entire process. Rahm really is a four letter word:
According to a Senate aide, the White House is now threatening to put Nebraska’s Offutt Air Force Base on the BRAC list if Nelson doesn’t fall into line.
Offutt Air Force Base employs some 10,000 military and federal employees in Southeastern Nebraska. As our source put it, this is a “naked effort by Rahm Emanuel and the White House to extort Nelson’s vote.” They are “threatening to close a base vital to national security for what?” asked the Senate staffer.
Indeed, Offutt is the headquarters for US Strategic Command, the successor to Strategic Air Command, and not by accident. STRATCOM was located in the middle of the country for strategic reasons. Its closure would be a massive blow to the economy of the state of Nebraska, but it would also be another example of this administration playing politics with our national security.
Hey, Democrats, how you like that post-partisan administration you elected? Too bad this White House won’t show that kind of bare-knuckle toughness to Iran. But no, they reserve it for America’s military. Give us a win on health care or Strategic Command gets it.
Damn this pisses me off. I try not to get ugly and personal about political stuff, but in this case it’s a real struggle. There’s politics, there’s tough politics and then there’s just plain abuse of power for the sake of power. This falls into that third category.
Let’s see if the Washington Post devotes 1/2 the ink to this Chicago-style arm breaking that they have to Joe Lieberman’s “playing politics” in the last couple days. I’m going to guess not.

December 15, 2009 @ 4:11 pmOkay, this is really and truly the last straw. What can we do to make our disgust known?
December 15, 2009 @ 4:21 pmThis news is no different than the healthcare debate taking place. The government is determined to control our lives through some form of leaverage. They have decided to use our health as a means to control us. If they come after our guns, we will be defenseless unless we stand up for our Constitutional rights. 2010 needs to be the beginning of the revolution. It will take place at the polls.
December 15, 2009 @ 4:37 pmJoliefleurs,
If the media were down the middle they would hound Rahm out of his position for this. As it is, you can expect they won’t mention it at all or, if they do, there will be no outrage about it.
December 15, 2009 @ 5:11 pmNelson should call the White House’s bluff on this if he has the stones. A major base can’t be closed at the snap of a finger. As this crowd’s thuggery becomes more and more blatant, the odds of them being around to carry out their threats after 2012 diminish. Same with the EPA finding on carbon, even without push back from Congress it will take a couple or three years to start implementing these nefarious schemes.
December 15, 2009 @ 7:55 pmThis is so wrong. I really don’t like any of the deal-making that goes on, but this crosses the line. It is extortion, in effect a kidnap for ransom ploy. And national security is held hostage.
This won’t be the first time I’ve written and called the White House (and all those who represent me).
December 15, 2009 @ 7:57 pmI agree with Adobe, just call their bluff. SOMEONE with even a bit of power needs to stand up to these thug-minded uh… four letter words ; )
December 15, 2009 @ 9:57 pmNelson’s personal Senatorial dilemma aside; the existential conundrum is obvious; harming national security by doing the right thing or giving in to extortion.
Yet, like the parting of the Gordian knot, the conundrum is broken asunder by realizing that this is evil’s essential strategy and the way that evil always triumphs…evil uses love against itself.
Evil says, “Give me what I want or I will take from you, that which you cannot bear to part.” That ‘part’ which, you cherish most. Whatever the specifics, that is the strategy. It is always personal because only in the face of personal loss are men moved to betray their most cherished principles.
If the sociological meme of Jesus’ life has any meaning, it is that a divine afterlife exists and, that its very existence changes everything.
Indeed, it is the assurance of the certainty of its existence which, changes the paradigm from personal attachment to the premise that this is all there is, to the premise that objective truth is not only worth dying for, but most of all, what makes life worth living for…and correspondingly, that life without that understanding is not worth much at all.
Nelson’s answer is thus clear, his understanding of that path remains to be revealed, yet lest we judge him insufficient, we should remember that “while many are called, few are chosen”. And fewer still, recognize the test and, see clearly the choices.

December 16, 2009 @ 9:25 amIf I were Nelson, this alone would confirm my vote against the bill. Then if they proceeded to move to close the base, I’d sue the government on the basis of “bill of attainder”…

December 16, 2009 @ 4:36 pmThe only “dilemma” Sen. Nelson faces is: defy Obama and risk our nation’s security, or vote for a bill that WILL destroy our health care (and probably his job). The MORAL stand is to expose this Gestapo/Mafioso tactic in public and openly oppose the bill. Unfortunately, he is most likely going to cave in to save his ass. 8^(
December 16, 2009 @ 5:19 pmrohm emmanuel is a jerk. nelson has to stand up to this weasel and tell his whole state what is going
December 16, 2009 @ 6:21 pmon. maybe nelson will stand up for what is right and vote the bill down.

December 17, 2009 @ 12:18 amYeah, Rahm is such a jerk, huh!? Am i Right or am I right?! You know what else!? A senate aide, whom of course I can’t name (but I assure you is totally for real and definetly said this… afterall, I am a true republican with a perfect track record for saying it like it is), also vented his true emotions to Nelson and said that he just wants all unborn babies to die and that he wants to eliminate America’s Airforce entirely! Can you believe it?!?! Who does this guy think he is, the fourth horseman?!
