Christian vs. Christ Follower

I saw these over at Think Christian. They’re the newest parody clips based on the Mac vs. PC commercials. I thought the first several that came out last year were somewhat amusing, but they’re really starting to hit their stride now:

This one’s pretty good too:

If by “hitting their stride” you mean that they’re becoming as adept as Ken/Ingrid/etc at broad-brush-painting and gross over-exaggeration, then yeah, they’re hitting their stride.

These videos are the other side of the same “draw a line in the sand and reject your brother because he’s different” coin as CRN/Slice.

    Brendt,

I see you point, but humor covers a multitude of sins. That’s something Ken, Ingrid et. al. are distinctly lacking.

And seriously, doesn’t Ken sound a little like that guy?

No, Ken sounds a lot like that guy. ;-)

I just don’t find these videos to be any more humorous than I find what Apprising does to be ministry.

I am 30 years old and having attended a contemporary church, I understand where the actor in the suit is coming from. Videos like this create a style vs. substance debate that is very dangerous. Christians have made cool contemporary music, skateboard videos, casual dress, coffee places and new buildings the brand, while at the same time not emphasizing and teaching our beliefs that do separate us from the rest of the world. In other words, a lot of fluff.

Then what happens is that people confront these new hip and trendy Christians with debate and we can’t fight back. Those that declare themselves “spiritual” agnostic, atheist, and unaffiliated are at an all time high in this country. Moreover, instead of issues that matter, we are now taking up issues like environmentalism and socialism and merging Christianity with those.

Be very careful in how you package the faith, because it attracts new believers, but does them no good in helping them grow.
