In the wake of any American shooting like the one at Va Tech, Europeans can always be counted on to tut-tut about American crime rates and gun laws. Der Spiegel has run a series of pieces on the European reaction. My award for the most obnoxious response has to go to a commenter on this piece who says:
Of course it is the person, not the gun, that kills. But the state should not assume that its population knows how to behave itself.
Spoken like a true socialist Euro-weenie.
Meanwhile, Sweden, that socialist paradise, has been experiencing a boom in crime. Last year crime was up 5% overall. So far 2007 is looking to be a banner year with violent crime up 14% and sex crimes up 9% in the first three months of 2007. At that rate, it won’t be long before the Swedes far outstrip the crime rates in comparable segments of the US (in areas where they haven’t already).
For the record, I don’t wish crime on anyone. It’s a horror that ruins society at every level. But after years of finger-wagging at the US (often by liberal citizens of the US who blame the right for somehow not being enlightened enough) I think I can be forgiven for pointing out that the Europeans own house is on fire and burning fast.
