Climate-Gate E-mails in Context

Wanted to put this on the main page. If you’ve seen the e-mails but aren’t sure what the context is, read this. You get a string of e-mails in sequence along with commentary and the e-mails that prompted these behind the scenes responses.

I’m not going to excerpt it because it’s long, but the overall impact is devastating. There is simply no doubt that Phil Jones and his friends (including Michael Mann) were willing to flout the law in order to avoid having “skeptics” check their work. This might be understandable on a purely human plane, none of us enjoy criticism. But as the post points out, this is not how science works or is supposed to work.

Jones should be forced to resign. The FOIA people at his university who went along with his scheme should be fired. There is no possible excuse for people in these positions doing what they did.

Finally, this is the piece the major media could have written but have so far refused to. As we now know the BBC had the story a month ago and sat on it. Even now, the NY Times and other outlets are busy ginning up excitement over Obama’s chances for emissions regulations at Copenhagen to report on the biggest scientific scandal of the year, if not the decade. The media has fallen badly on this story. I’ll be surprised if the Times’ public editor isn’t issuing another “we were a beat behind” mea culpa next month.

But, for all its bad, very, very bad, it doesn’t alter the fact that the science from all over the world is almost unanimous on this subject. There isn’t a single, credible, independant source (i’e, not funded in some way by the oil/coal lobby) that concludes other than AGW is a fact.

This shouldn’t be a left/right issue. You can only conclude that man made climate change is not a real and present danger if you decide in advance that that is what you are going to find out – usually because that is what you are being paid to conclude.

    Keith,

I’m not so sure. It seems pretty clear that this group of scientists were all collaborating to peer review one another’s papers and to deny publication to anyone who disagrees with them. Therefore the claim that the science is settled is bogus. The fact is that the skeptics have been shut out. In other words it’s not unanimity you’re seeing, it’s control.

Furthermore, the scientists on the pro-AGW side don’t seem any less political and results driven than those on the other side so far as I can see. Don’t forget they are well-funded and world famous for their conclusions. They have every personal motivation to push their agenda, even beyond the facts.

The information coming from the computer files is very troubling. Perhaps there is an explanation for the “adjustments” being made to the raw data or the selection of certain core samples and the exclusion of others, but it looks suspiciously as if the proponents of AGW have decided ahead of time that the right answer is a hockey stick and the data is made to dance until it reaches that conclusion. As one of the e-mails notes, they have no explanation for the cooling over the last decade. It’s not predicted by their models. By their own admission, something doesn’t add up here.

Maybe all of this can be explained away. I don’t think we know at this moment.

    Keith,

“the science from all over the world is almost unanimous on this subject” because they have made it so. At least, that is a very natural interpretation of all of this.

Is the earth warming? Is it due to human activity? Is there anything we can do about it? Should we stop it if we can?

None of these questions have been answered satisfactorily because these guys, and their willing accomplices in the media, have not permitted it. Let’s have a real discussion now.

    Keith,

If anything, it feels like Jones/Mann et. al. are just digging their heels in further. The only way they will be pried out is if Verum Serum and every other right-ish site force the MSM to report this story.

I give that a 50-50 chance of success.

    Keith,

Who funds the non “oil/coal lobby” scientists? Isn’t it government and environmental groups? They have an equally vested interest in AWG being real.

Now it turns out the AWG science was rigged from the start. As a result, the conclusions reached are fraudulent and untrustworthy. If you had invested with Bernie Madoff, wouldn’t you worry about your money when you found out he was a fraud?

The ONLY evidence of rising temps is a now discredited computer program period.
