A Brief Summary of Climate-Gate
John on November 24, 2009 at 10:08 am
I’m stealing this from the always excellent Doug Ross. Someone has put up an executive summary of Climate-Gate which really gives a sense of the scope of malfeasance involved. A sample:
- Michael Mann discusses how to destroy a journal that has published sceptic papers.(1047388489)
- Tim Osborn discusses how data are truncated to stop an apparent cooling trend showing up in the results (0939154709).
- Phil Jones describes the death of sceptic, John Daly, as “cheering news”.
- Phil Jones encourages colleagues to delete information subject to FoI request.(1212063122)
- Phil Jones says he has use Mann’s “Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series”…to hide the decline”. Real Climate says “hiding” was an unfortunate turn of phrase.(0942777075)
- Letter to The Times from climate scientists was drafted with the help of Greenpeace.(0872202064)
- Mann thinks he will contact BBC’s Richard Black to find out why another BBC journalist was allowed to publish a vaguely sceptical article.(1255352257)
- Kevin Trenberth says they can’t account for the lack of recent warming and that it is a travesty that they can’t.(1255352257)
- Tom Wigley tells Jones that the land warming since 1980 has been twice the ocean warming and that this might be used by sceptics as evidence for urban heat islands.(1257546975)
- Tom Wigley say that Keith Briffa has got himself into a mess over the Yamal chronology (although also says it’s insignificant. Wonders how Briffa explains McIntyre’s sensitivity test on Yamal and how he explains the use of a less-well replicated chronology over a better one. Wonders if he can. Says data withholding issue is hot potato, since many “good” scientists condemn it.(1254756944)
- Briffa is funding Russian dendro Shiyatov, who asks him to send money to personal bank account so as to avoid tax, thereby retaining money for research.(0826209667)
- Kevin Trenberth says climatologists are nowhere near knowing where the energy goes or what the effect of clouds is. Says nowhere balancing the energy budget. Geoengineering is not possible.(1255523796)
- Mann discusses tactics for screening and delaying postings at Real Climate.(1139521913)
This is about a third of the total summary. Jump over to Doug Ross’ site to read it all. The multiple references to massaging data to reach pre-determined conclusions should be enough to call their entire output into question. Beyond that, the big picture is of a bunch of schoolyard bullies determined to elbow in the ribs anyone who threatens their status. One certainly does not get the impression that this is science divorced from politics and personalities. On the contrary, this is us vs. them.
Incidentally, it’s the same attitude that we saw when e-mails from the Smithsonian institution were published. In that case one individual was blamed for allowing the publication of an intelligent design paper in a journal. It’s the same tone.
Seems to me the truth should be a little more robust than that. It shouldn’t involve a cabal of scientists/politicians eager to hide the problems in their theories and knee-cap anyone in their way.

November 24, 2009 @ 1:14 pmWell, Keith, it is the Guardian we’re talking about. I notice they didn’t bother to reproduce any of the e-mails in question. They only mention the one in detail and then quickly assure the reader it’s nothing. Basically that’s one long CYA piece for Jones.
And just like the ACORN story here in the States, Jones’ allies are going to go after the whistleblower and have already put aside the content of the e-mails, some of which is pretty damning. Global warming skeptics have been fired for far less.
November 24, 2009 @ 3:58 pmKeith, your subservience and obeisance to CRU or to Jones is admirable. It is also a lost cause because he has been dishonest. Honesty is a virtue, apparently Jones lacks same. I know, I Iack the “expertise” to comment on him according to you because he is a scientist and I am but a lowly “commoner”. Wait a second, I am an American citizen, not a British subject.
November 24, 2009 @ 6:54 pmJohn,
elsewhere they’ve covered more of the emails, just not in that piece. Even George Monbiot has called for Jones to be sacked.
Ralph – you only lack expertise to comment on what is and isn’t science. Here’s a challenge for you – I lacked even the expertise to even find out what Sxxx and WRExxx (as compared in the email http://www.verumserum.com/?p=10394) were referring to – could you clear that up for me?
Science gets peer reviewed because usually its so specialised that the only people able to adequately review it are other scientists. Laypeople just don’t understand enough of the basics to assess the methodology or results.
If you’re going to use quotation marks it’s usual to use, you know, a quotation. Honesty is, as you say, a virtue.

November 25, 2009 @ 8:54 amKeith, here is a link I found that describes these alternative plans. I would hope there are other links as well but from what I can glean from the review they are stabilization plans at different levels of CO2. That is to say if we reduce emissions by x at y level of CO2. Read the review and see if you agree. I figure Wigley was very familiar with the math, the models and projected outcomes and therefore blasted the people who wrote the letter.
It is a good point to have a better understanding of what the IPCC and government officials are considering in order to “stabilize” CO2. Which to me btw, seems rather bizarre and arrogant but hey, who am I to question these pinheads, I mean scientists.
Anyway, http://books.google.com/books?id=OkCnnMiXFMUC&pg=PA261&lpg=PA261&dq=Sxxx+stabilization+profiles&source=bl&ots=v2HZC9MXdM&sig=NcQAIt_XF9MvAPRDTeROW0g_eAA&hl=en&ei=q4sNS_HoAc2vtgfF-OTdAg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CAgQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=Sxxx%20stabilization%20profiles&f=falsehere is the link, hope it helps and I will look for more info on it.
November 25, 2009 @ 12:20 pmI just recently purchased a winter coat to deal with the global cooling that we are experiencing. The purchase came with a book entitled, “How to Commit Intelllectual Suicide Relative to Global Warming.” The forward was written by Obamanure and had nothing to do with climate issues. It appears that our beloved leader needs an adjustment of his meds. He did mention that he has been practicing bowing before dignitaries for quite some time – something he picked up while living in Hawaii. He then mentions how he would like to go on a date with Sarah Palin. Very strange comments.
November 25, 2009 @ 2:21 pmAs our society becomes more and more advanced, and as we are able to use technology to solve more and more problems, our scientists will become more and more specialized, and the distance between the citizen and the scientist will widen. Will we begin to just trust the scientists with more and more of our decisions, trust their peer review processes, trust their objectivity? Or do we continue to apply our crude and simple moral principles on their work, which often inhibits raw technological advance/correction?
Keep in mind that when you overspecialize you begin to lack in other general areas. “Overspecialize, and you breed in weakness.” It’s an interesting thought.

December 2, 2009 @ 7:33 am[...] In case you haven’t been keeping up, as Director Kappos clearly hasn’t, emails were leaked last month from the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit – a world-renowned climate change research center – which reveal a “trick” being employed by researchers to massage temperature statistics (source).
